However, his father told him, “Why go overseas when you’re not the best player in the U.S.?” Shelton believes his father’s advice helped him focus on his tennis because he didn’t have to travel constantly and could stick to a routine.

Due to his remarkable performances, he ranked as the No.3 player in the USTA Boys’ 18 division and No. 306 in ITF Junior. 

College Career

In June 2020, on Father’s Day, Shelton decided to join the Florida Gators tennis team, where his father, Bryan Shelton, is the head coach. Shelton is studying finance. During his first year in 2020–21, he mostly played as the No. 5 singles player and won 28 matches while losing 5. 

He played a key role in helping the Gators win the Southeastern Conference (SEC) regular season title. Additionally, Shelton won the decisive match at the 2021 NCAA Championships, which secured Florida’s first national title in tennis.
